Moon Rock Glazes ^6
Moon Rocks colors can be layered to create stunning visual effects. Allow the first layer to set slightly (loses its glossiness) before adding the next. Alternate directions of coats (apply one vertically and the next horizontally). 1-2 coats of each color are recommended, but additional coats will produce a more pronounced puffed pattern.
Use with Underglazes and Engobes: Moon Rocks remain dimensional when applied over Underglazes and Stoneware Engobes, preserving its raised texture. For best results, bisque fire the Underglaze or Engobe to cone 04 before applying the Moon Rocks, as this helps with adhesion. When used under a glaze, the texture may flatten during firing.
Firing Range: cone 5 to cone 10 (2167F-2345F /1186C-1285C) in both oxidation and reduction firings. Firing at higher temperatures may result in the glaze texture to increase and colors to darken. Because results can vary based on firing conditions and layering techniques, its recommended to test the glaze beforehand.
Application: Stir well. Using a brush, apply 3-6 coats in alternate directions to greenware or soft fired, cone 04 (1060C/1940F) stoneware bisque. Heavy application will produce a more pronounced texture. When the glossy sheen is gone, apply the next layer. Build coats until hairline cracking develops. Handle with care. Fire to cone 5-10 (1186-1285C/2167-2345F). Results may vary; testing recommended. Clay body, thickness, firing process, and temperature will affect results.
